Cranberry Chutney Sauce recipe

This sweet yet sour chutney is a great alternative to the more traditional cranberry sauce, but it still has enough flavour to feel Christmassy. Serve it with poultry or even smeared on turkey sandwiches on boxing day.

  • 350g fresh cranberries
  • 1 small red onion
  • 2 small apples
  • 2 small pears
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 4 tbsp. orange juice, bottled is fine
  • 4 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • Pinch ground cinnamon
  • Dash vegetable oil

  1. Peel, core and chop the apples and pears into small cubes. Finely chop the onion.

  2. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onion for five minutes, until softened and tender.

  3. Add the cranberries, orange juice, caster sugar, apple cider vinegar and cinnamon. Cook for five minutes, stirring regularly.

  4. Add the apple and pear, and cook for 10-20 minutes or until all of the fruit is tender. Jar and keep in the fridge.

Try some ground cloves in this chutney for a slightly different taste, or use all apples or all pears depending on what you have in. This recipe serves 12.
